Pulwama is a picturesque small town located in the middle of Kashmir Valley. It is the administrative headquarters of Pulwama district. Its amiable climatic condition, magnificent natural beauty and close proximity to state capital Srinagar make it one of the major tourist destinations of the state.

Geography of Pulwama

Pulwama is located at 32.88°N latitude and 74.92°E longitude. The terrain here is more or less flat and the soil is highly suitable for farming. The area has an elevation of 5350 ft above sea level.

Climate of Pulwama

The climatic condition in and around Pulwama can be termed as warm and temperate. The average annual temperature in this region is around 13.degree centigrade. July is the warmest month; during this period the temperature can shoot up to 24 degree centigrade. January is the coldest month; the temperature may come down to 1.8 degree centigrade in this period. The area receives plenty of rainfall throughout the year. The average annual rainfall in the region is 731mm. However, the levels of precipitation can vary by 92 mm between the driest and the wettest moths.

History of Pulwama

As per revenue records, this area was initially known as Panwang. It later became Pulgam and then Pulwama. Other than this, not much is known about the history of this town. However, the area around this town has a rich history. Archeological finds at Awantipora and Tral throw considerable light on this. It can be guessed that Pulwama was once ruled by great kings such as Raja Awantivarman and Laltaditya.

Court in Pulwama

Pulwama, being the administrative headquarters of the district, is the seat of the Principal and Session Judge. Besides, there is also the Court of Chief Justice Magistrate (CJM), Court of Additional Session Judge and Munsiff Court. 

The court complex was constructed in 1961. At that time it was functioning as a Munsiff Court and dealt mainly with civil and criminal cases; in addition, it also undertook registration work. Then in 1980, the court was upgraded to District and Session Court; the Legal Aid Clinic was opened in 2011.

Pulwama is located in an agricultural belt.  More than 70% of the population here are engaged in farming. The area is famous for its fruit cultivation. The apple orchards of this region are renowned all over the globe. Other fruits grown here are almonds, cherry, and walnut.

Then, there are few places of architectural wonder; Awantipora, located at a distance from 17.8 Km from Pulwama, is a prime example of that. Payer temple, also known as Payech temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was carved out of a single monolithic stone in 10 century AD. It has a pyramidal roof built in two distinct tiers. Its square sanctum, built on molded base, is open on all sides. Trefoil arches on the doorways are decorated with beautiful sculptures of Lord Shiva.

How to Reach Pulwama

Pulwama, located on National Highway 1A, is easily accessible by road from all parts of the country. To reach Pulwama by air, you must first come to Srinagar and then travel by road transport. Since the distance between these towns is around 26.8 Km, it takes around 40 minutes to reach Pulwama from Srinagar. 

If on the other hand, you want to travel by train, you must first come to Jammu Tawai and then travel by road. The distance between these two places is 280 Km and takes around 7 hours to reach.
